RICHMOND, Va. — Rising junior Cole Ekert was named First Team All-State by the Virginia Association of Sports Information Directors (VaSID), the organization announced Monday. Ekert, a rising junior, is the third Spider men's golfer to earn All-State honors from VaSID in the last 10 seasons, joining Lou Baker in 2021 and Matthew Lowe in 2016.
Ekert led Richmond with a 71.67 scoring average this season, the lowest ever by a Spider, and dropped his career scoring average to 72.60, also the best in the program history. He was the only Spider to compete in all 10 of Richmond's events, the leading the team in rounds under par (11), top-10 finishes (five) and top-20 finishes (seven). Ekert played his best in the spring, finishing in the top six in five of his six starts, including a tie for first at the RedHawk Intercollegiate in Pittsburgh in April.
He led Richmond with a sixth-place finish at the Atlantic 10 Championship, shooting a 1-over 217 over 54 holes. Following the tournament, Ekert was named to the A-10's All-Conference Team, joining Lowe (2015-16) as the only Spiders to earn All-A-10 honors as a freshman and sophomore. He was also a College Sports Communicators Academic All-District selection.
Ekert's sterling play has continued this summer. He recently won the prestigious Mittelmark Invitational at Fenway Golf Club in Scarsdale, N.Y., an event in which Lowe placed fourth.
