RICHMOND, VA - University of Richmond's Head Cross Country Coach, Steve Taylor, announced the addition of Evan Leach to the coaching staff as a Volunteer Coach for the upcoming season.Â
"Evan joined our program last fall as a graduate student", said Taylor. "He's been clear from the beginning of his interest in coaching at this level. After a year with us as a student-athlete we couldn't be more excited to welcome him as a staff member."
Leach comes to the Richmond staff with a distinct background. He recently competed as a graduate student for the Spiders during the 2022-2023 school year, demonstrating his commitment to both academics and athletics.
For the past two years he served as an Assistant Track & Field Coach at Glen Allen High School in Henrico, Virginia, from 2022 to 2023. During his two-year tenure, Evan played a role in mentoring and guiding young athletes, helping them excel in the sport. His primary focus was the boy's and girl's sprint and relay groups as he helped Glen Allen to notable success at both the state and national levels.
While helping the Jaguars, the boy's team achieved second-place finishes at the VHSL 5A Indoor Track & Field State Championships in 2022 and 2023. They also secured runner-up positions at the 2022 VHSL 5A Outdoor Track & Field State Championships. On the girl's side, Glen Allen's three consecutive runner-up finishes culminated in victory at the 2023 VHSL 5A Outdoor Track & Field State Championships.
Evan's achievements extend beyond coaching; he is a two-time Collegiate Running Association All-American, with notable fourth and ninth place finishes in the 2023 and 2022 Collegiate 10K Road Race National Championships respectively. Additionally, as a member of the Spiders program he was successful on the cross country course and qualified for the 2023 IC4A Indoor Track & Field Championships in the 5,000M.
As an undergraduate student he is a former captain of the VCU Cross Country and Track and Field Teams and an Academic Director's Honor Roll member.
"I'm confident that his experiences and dedication will contribute to the success of this program", said Taylor. "His experiences from athlete to coach embody the spirit that we value within this program."
