PAWLEYS ISLAND, S.C. — Four Spiders shot under par Sunday in the opening round of the Golfweek Fall Challenge at True Blue Golf Club, helping Richmond to a team score of 9-under par, tied for the seventh-lowest round in program history. Richmond is tied Western Carolina for fourth place in the 14-team event with 36 holes remaining.
A pair of Spiders, junior Cole Ekert and freshman Owen Pearce, fired 3-under rounds of 69 in Round 1. Ekert, who set the program's single-season scoring record last season, recorded four birdies vs just one bogey on his way to his 17th career round under par. Pearce opened his college career with four birdies and one bogey on the front nine before making all pars on the back nine.
"I was very nervous on the first tee but after I hit my first shot the nerves went away," said Pearce. "I knew I would be nervous in the beginning but I just had to remember to have fun and not stress too much."
Pearce and Ekert are tied for 12th on the individual leaderboard.
Senior Garrett Clark is tied for 22nd at 2-under par following an open-round 70, one shot in front of graduate student Lou Baker, who is tied for 35th at 1-under par. Sophomore Drew Carlin is tied for 55th at 1-over par.
Playing as an individual, freshman Jack LaPiana begin his college career with a 2-under 70, offsetting one bogey with three birdies.
The Spiders will begin the second round Monday at 8:30 AM.
