Spiders Open CAA Action With 20-19 Win At Stony Brook
09/23/2023 | Football
Richmond, Va. – The University of Richmond football team gutted out a 20-19 win at Stony Brook Saturday, taking the Seawolves to the wire and pulling off the team's first win at LaValle Stadium since Nov. 9 2013.
The Spiders battled through injuries, rain and heavy winds on their way to the first one-point game since 2015 and first one-point win since 2014.
Richmond picked up 307 yards of total offense backed by a season-high 211 rushing yards. Savon Smith led the effort, picking up 115 yards on the ground and a touchdown for the second 100-yard rushing game of his career.
Richmond's second drive of the game ended in a Stony Brook interception that set up for a Seawolves field goal three plays later, but the Spiders were able to turn the tables a quarter later and when Mikey Jarmolowich intercepted a pass at the Stony Brook 31-yard line and returned it 30 yards. The interception marked Jarmolowich's first as a Spider. Stony Brook's goal-line defense held the Spiders up, setting up for a successful Andrew Lopez field goal to tie the game.
Stony Brook went three and out on their next drive before Jackson Hardy connected with Nick DeGennaro on a 56-yard touchdown pass to take the lead. The touchdown pass and reception came as career longs for both DeGennaro and Hardy, who made his first career start in the contest.
Stony Brook then responded on its next possession to make it a 10-10 game at half.
As time winded down in the third quarter, Savon Smith broke loose through the line for a 36-yard touchdown run and Andrew Lopez connected on the PAT to take back the lead.
Stony Brook scored on its first possession of the fourth quarter on a pick six to make it a 17-16 game, but freshman Matthew Traynor was able to get a hand on and blocked the point after attempt to give Richmond the one-point edge.
Stony Brook then kicked a field goal on the following possession to make it 19-17. Two drives later, in what would be their last possession of the game, the Spiders worked the clock down from 6:11 to 00:48 thanks to an 11-play drive that put the ball on the Seawolves 11-yard line and set up for Andrew Lopez' game-winning 21-yard field goal.
Stony Brook would get the ball one more time, ending their night with a Donovan Hoilette interception that secured the Spiders second win of the season and moved Stony Brook to 0-4 on the year.
The Spiders are now 7-10 all-time in CAA openers and move to 4-2 when opening conference play on the road.
Tristan Wheeler led Richmond's tacklers with nine, while Jarmolowich added seven to pair with in interception. Marlem Louis and Angelo Rankin Jr. picked up 6 tackles each, with Rankin Jr. tacking on a sack from the backfield for 12 lost Seawolves yards and forced a fumble in the process.
Up next, Richmond returns home for Family Weekend to host Hampton on Sept. 30. Kickoff is set for 2:00 at Robins Stadium.
