Spiders Sweep Fall's Final Weekly A-10 Golf Awards
11/14/2024 | Men's Golf
RICHMOND, Va. — Senior Cole Ekert was named Golfer of the Week and freshman Carson Baez was named Rookie of the Week when the Atlantic 10 announced its final weekly men's golf awards of the fall on Thursday. Both Ekert and Baez were honored for their performances at the Monterrey Collegiate Classic on October 25-26, Richmond's fifth and final event of the fall season.
Ekert shot a 12-under 204 to place second among 73 golfers. He matched the second-lowest 54-hole score in program history, trailing only his 13-under 203 at last year's VCU Shootout. (Ekert equaled the 12-under 204 shot by Daniel Walker at Golden Eagle in 2013.) He carded a 3-under 69 in Round 1, a 5-under 67 in Round 2, and a 4-under 68 in Round 3, finishing one shot behind Juan Luis Bethencourt from UTRGV. It was the fifth top-two finish of his career and first since earning medalist honors at the Any Given Tuesday Collegiate last April.
Baez won his third consecutive A-10 Men's Golf Rookie of the Week honor after tying for 17th at 4-under par (212). He shot rounds of 72 (E), 67 (-5) and 73 (+1) to record his fourth straight top-20 finish.
Ekert and Baez contributed to Richmond's fourth-place finish in the 12-team field. The Spiders have finished in the top five in their first five events of a season for the first time since 2010-11, when UR placed in the top five in its first six events.
Richmond's spring season will begin on February 10-11 with the Atlantic 10-MAC Match Play event in Dade City, Fla.
