Richmond, Va. — A finalist for the Eddie Robinson National Coach of the Year award, University of Richmond Head Football Coach Russ Huesman has been tabbed Bobby Ross Coach of the Year, the top Division I coach in Virginia, by the Touchdown Club of Richmond.
Huesman earns the recognition after leading the Spiders to the FCS Playoffs for a third consecutive year. Under his leadership, Richmond has won back-to-back conference championships—marking only the second time in program history—and finished the regular season with 10 wins, the team's best regular-season record since 2009.
The 2024 Spiders completed an undefeated 8-0 conference season, the second such accomplishment in program history and the first since a 6-0 record in the Southern Conference in 1968. This year's team became just the seventh in CAA history to finish conference play unbeaten.
Since taking over the program in 2017, Huesman has become the third-winningest coach in Richmond football history, and is now just two wins shy of surpassing Ed Merrick for second place on the all-time list.
The Spiders have steadily improved under Huesman's leadership. The 2021 season saw Richmond battle through injuries and a 2-5 start before finishing with four straight wins, including a 20-17 victory over William & Mary in the Capital Cup. Since that turnaround, the Spiders are 32-10 overall, with an impressive 26-3 record in Coastal Athletic Association conference games.
