Spiders Sweep Weekly A-10 Golf Honors
04/10/2024 | Men's Golf
RICHMOND, Va. — Spiders junior Cole Ekert is the Atlantic 10 Golfer of the Week and freshman Jack LaPiana is the A-10 Rookie of the Week, the conference announced Wednesday. Ekert and LaPiana were honored for helping Richmond to a win at last week's Any Given Tuesday Collegiate at True Blue Golf Club in Pawleys Island, S.C. Richmond finished the weather-shortened 36-hole event at 6-under par (570), best among the 19 teams in the field.
Ekert was the individual medalist at the event, carding rounds of 70 (-2) and 66 (-6) to register his second career win and first since last year's RedHawk Intercollegiate. He is the seventh player in program history to win multiple events, joining Danny Pizetoski, Jordan Utley, Joe Horowitz, Ken Macdonald, Steve Jamroz, and Rob Gai.
LaPiana opened with a 1-under 71 in Round 1 at the AGT Collegiate and shot 73 (+1) in Round 2 to finish at even par, tied for 24th among the 100 golfers in the field. He is the first Spider to win multiple A-10 Rookie of the Week Awards since Ekert himself, who won it three times during the 2021-22 season.
Richmond's win was its first since the 2021 VCU Shootout and its 11th under coach Adam Decker. The 19-team field was the largest in an event won by the Spider since the 2006 Towson invitational (23 teams).
This is the second time this season Ekert has won the league's Golfer of the Week award and the second time LaPiana has been named Rookie of the Week. Ekert shared the A-10 Golfer of the Week honor on September 25 after setting the program scoring record with a 13-under par 203 at the VCU Shootout, tied for second in the field. LaPiana was named the conference's first Rookie of the Week this season on September 16 after shooting a 6-under 210 to tie for 18th at the Golfweek Fall Challenge, which was also held at True Blue Golf Club.
Richmond will return to action on April 15-16 at the Wofford Intercollegiate.
