NEWTON, N.C. — Freshman Quin Polin fired a 3-under 67 in the second round of the Wofford Intercollegiate Monday afternoon, leading the Spiders to the top of the leaderboard and finding himself in first place among the 81 golfers in the field. Polin and the Spiders are at 7-over par (567) with 18 holes remaining, three shots in front of South Carolina and five in front of A-10 foe Davidson. The other 10 teams in the field are all at least 18-over par after playing 36 holes on Monday.
Polin recorded four birdies in a seven-hole stretch halfway through his second round at Catawba Country Club on his way to shooting his lowest round of the season at 3-under (67). He'll enter Tuesday's final round at 2-under (138), one shot in front of Wofford's Cedric Otten.
"Just staying in the moment and being patient was the key," said Polin of his play Monday. "36 holes is a long day and you'll get bad breaks, but I feel like I responded well today."
"We had some great play from Quin today. He was very steady in the difficult conditions," said Spiders coach Adam Decker. "We had lots of patience today. You had to be in the correct spots on your approach shots. The course played tough with a lot of slope on the greens and a windy afternoon. It was a nice team effort today and we are looking forward to the final round tomorrow."
Senior Lou Baker is tied for fifth at 1-over (141), one shot in front of freshman Jack LaPiana, who's tied for eighth at 2-over (142).
Junior Cole Ekert carded back-to-back rounds of 73 Monday and is tied with three other golfers for 22nd at 6-over (146). Among that group is Spiders sophomore Drew Carlin, who is competing as an individual.
Senior Garrett Clark is tied for 72nd at 15-over (155).
Tuesday's final round will begin with a shotgun start at 9 AM. The Spiders are seeking back-to-back wins after winning the Any Given Tuesday Collegiate at the beginning fo the month.
