Richmond, Va. — University of Richmond Athletics and Spiders head football coach Russ Huesman have agreed to a contract extension, Vice President and Director of Athletics John Hardt announced Friday. Huesman, now entering his eighth season as head coach at Richmond and 16th overall as a collegiate head coach, has been instrumental in solidifying Richmond's position among the Football Championship Subdivision's best teams. Terms of the extension were not disclosed.
"Russ has consistently demonstrated his ability to produce winning college football teams that proudly represent their university on and off the playing field," said Hardt. "He's played a major role in so many of the greatest Spider football accomplishments, including our national championship and back-to-back NCAA playoff appearances. I'm excited to see Russ and the Spiders defend their CAA title this season, and I'm looking forward to working with Russ and his staff on a successful transition to the Patriot League in 2025."
Under Huesman's guidance, Richmond made consecutive playoff appearances in 2022 and 2023. Most recently, the Spiders clinched a share of the CAA title in 2023, advancing to the FCS Playoffs Second Round for the second year in a row. Huesman's 100th head coaching victory came in Richmond's thrilling 27-26 win over William & Mary, as the Spiders reclaimed the Capital Cup and clinched the conference title. After starting the season 3-5, Huesman guided the Spiders through a seven-game winning streak, including a victory over No. 22 Rhode Island. 2023 saw three Spiders (Aaron Trusler, Ryan Coll, Tristan Wheeler) earn All-America honors while eight were selected as All-CAA.
"I take great pride in our program and the success we've achieved, including back-to-back playoff appearances. I want to extend my thanks to John Hardt and President Kevin Hallock for their unwavering support of both me and our entire program. I am eager to build on our achievements and continue leading the Spiders to even greater success moving forward," said Huesman.
Huesman is currently serving in his second stint with the Spiders after spending five seasons (2004-08) as an assistant coach, including leading the team to the 2008 National Championship as defensive coordinator.
Huesman and the Spiders begin the 2024 campaign Aug. 31 at Virginia.
