07/31/2024 | Football
Richmond, Va. — The University of Richmond football team's 2023 CAA co-championship title defense is set to begin tomorrow when players report to campus with preseason training camp opening Friday morning. All practices will take place at Robins Stadium. Players will alternate between wearing helmets, shells (helmets and shoulder pads) and full pads over the course of the 19-session camp. All camp dates are open to the public and are subject to change. Fans may watch practice from the west side of the stadium (College Rd. side).
The 2024 Spiders football team is made up of 86 players from 16 states, Washington D.C., Canada, Australia and Ireland. This year's team is made up of 20 true freshmen, 16 redshirt freshmen, two sophomores, 15 redshirt sophomores, two juniors, 16 redshirt juniors, four seniors, seven redshirt seniors and four graduate students.
Now in his 15th season as a college head coach and eighth at the head of Richmond, the Spiders are under the leadership of Russ Huesman. Huesman carries a 101-70 all-time record into the 2024 campaign and has led the Spiders to the playoffs the last two seasons. Last season, he clinched his 100th career victory after beating rival William & Mary in a thrilling Capital Cup showdown in Williamsburg that also earned Richmond a share of the CAA title – it's first under Huesman.
Last year, the Spiders reached the playoffs in back-to-back seasons for the first time since 2016. Richmond earned a share of the CAA title for the first time since 2015 and advanced to the FCS Playoffs Second Round for the second year in a row. The Spiders were at or near the top of the national rankings in key statistical categories and eight Spiders were named All-CAA while punter Aaron Trusler, offensive lineman Ryan Coll and linebacker Tristan Wheeler earned All-America honors. After starting the season 3-5, Huesman and the Spiders put up a seven game win streak including a win over No. 22 Rhode Island to end the season with a 9-4 overall record.
In the CAA's 2024 preseason order of finish, the Spiders were selected second behind fellow 2023 CAA co-champions Villanova.
This offseason, Huesman added three new faces to his coaching staff in running backs coach Rachid Ibrahim, offensive line coach Keegan Kennedy and tight ends coach Kyle Edwards. Ibrahim comes to the Spiders from Virginia Tech, Edwards arrives from Maryland and Kennedy comes from Harvard. Also new to the staff this year is Director of Football Ops and Recruiting Coordinator Dan Madden, who most recently served in a similar capacity at VMI.
Huesman and his staff dipped into the transfer portal this offseason, picking up seven new players including running back Zach Palmer-Smith (Wagner), tight end Matt Robbert (Cornell), placekicker Brandon Peskin (Fordham), defensive back John Michael DiRoberto (Wofford), linebacker Carter Glassmyer (Saint Francis), wide receiver Cole Schilling (Elon) and defensive lineman Colin Freer, who previously played lacrosse at Princeton.
Once again this season, RichmondSpiders.com will be producing a camp notebook series throughout the month of August breaking down the 2024 Spiders personnel by position group.
