RICHMOND, Va. — A year's worth of programming aimed at developing the next generation of Spider leaders opened Tuesday night in Spider Hall with Spider Performance & Development's annual Leadership Kickoff Banquet. The event introduced this year's theme for members of the 2024-25 leadership cohort: Achieving the Impossible Dream.
Senior Associate Athletics Director for Leadership & Student-Athlete Development Lauren Wicklund served as the program's master of ceremonies, introducing the Impossible Dream theme with stories of goal-setting and unexpected achievements from her years in college athletics. The evening's featured speaker was Spider men's basketball head coach Chris Mooney, who was introduced by senior point guard DeLonnie Hunt. Mooney spoke about the importance of "mastering the mundane," explaining how the road to achieving impossible dreams often starts with a dedication to perfecting the most routine elements of one's craft.
Attendees, which included more than 70 Spider student-athletes, coaches, and staff members, were encouraged to write their own impossible dream in a Spider Athletics memo book and then put one word that symbolizes their dream on a sticker. The stickers were affixed to red and blue balloons, which were then released into the evening sky above the Queally Athletics Center.
