Women Place Third, Men Take Fourth at Spider Alumni Open

MECHANICSVILLE, Va. — Richmond's men's and women's cross country teams opened their 2024 campaigns Saturday at the Spider Alumni Open at Pole Green Park. The women placed third among the 14 teams in the 4k race, while the men finished fourth in the 6k race.
Senior Laurel Kurtz led the women with a 16th-place finish in 14:16.4. She was followed closely by junior Mollie Fenn, who ran a personal-best 14:31.5 to place 24th, and freshman Kasey Cone, who ran 14:39.4 and placed 25th in her collegiate debut.
The Spiders final two scorers were senior Izzy Blaylock, who placed 31st in 14:51.6, and freshman Melina Johnston, who ran 14:56.4 to finish 35th.
Richmond's total score of 95 was behind only Wiliam & Mary (61) and Virginia (16).
The men's team finished with a score of 83, trailing William & Mary (80), American (67), and Virginia (15) in the 14-team field.
Junior Henry Haase placed eighth in 18:33.0, first among runners from schools other than UVA. Junior William Marhold was the next Spider, taking 18th place in 18:45.7, more than a minute faster than his career best entering the race.
Three underclassmen followed for Richmond: freshman Brady Barber in 19th at 18:46.5, sophomore Eric Scully in 24th at 18:55.6, and sophomore Alex Krack in 29th at 19:03.5.

Next for the Spiders is a trip to Raleigh, N.C. for NC State's Adidas XC Challenge on September 20.
