Spiders Drop Homecoming Matchup Against Holy Cross
10/18/2025 | Football
Richmond, Va. – The University of Richmond football team dropped its Homecoming matchup Saturday, falling to Holy Cross 28–22 at Robins Stadium.
With the loss, Richmond drops to 4-4 overall on the season and 1-3 in the Patriot League. Holy Cross earned its first win of the season, moving to 1-6, 1-1.
Quarterback Kyle Wickersham led the Spiders down the field on the opening drive, capitalizing on a roughing the passer penalty before launching a 56-yard touchdown pass to Andreas Hill just four plays in to give Richmond an early 7–0 lead. However, it would be the Spiders' only touchdown until late in the third quarter, as they struggled to convert red zone opportunities into touchdowns.
In his first game back from injury since the Sept. 27 game against Howard, Wickersham finished 20-of-32 for a season-high 218 yards. He also had 17 carries for 80 yards.
Holy Cross answered on its opening possession with a 16-play, 75-yard drive that drained nine minutes off the clock and tied the game at 7–7 with 4:29 remaining in the first quarter.
On Richmond's next possession, a near-blocked punt from their own 29 resulted in just a 16-yard kick, giving Holy Cross prime field position at Richmond's 45. The Crusaders capitalized, finishing the short drive with a one-yard touchdown run to take a 14–7 lead early in the second quarter.
Sophomore linebacker Blake Houser, filling in for an injured Carter Glassmyer, led the Spiders defense with 12 tackles, including a tackle for loss. Peyton Seelmann followed with nine tackles including a sack and a pass breakup.
Both offenses stalled for the remainder of the half, trading punts. Richmond managed to add three points before the break, as Jayden Alsheskie tied his career-long with a 41-yard field goal to remain perfect on the season at 5-for-5.
Alsheskie opened the scoring in the third quarter with a 28-yard field goal to cut the deficit to 14–13. Midway through the quarter, Richmond fumbled at its own 47-yard line, and Holy Cross scored on the next play with a 43-yard touchdown run to extend its lead to 21–13.
Richmond responded on the following possession. A 45-yard reception by Ja'Vion Griffin set the Spiders up at the Holy Cross 25, and Aziz Foster-Powell carried the ball on three straight plays—gaining eight and 10 yards before capping the drive with a seven-yard touchdown run. Foster-Powell joined Wicekrsham as Richmond's leading rusher, picking up 80 yards on 13 carries. The Spiders went for two, but Wickersham was stopped short on a quarterback keeper, leaving the score at 21–19.
Holy Cross added another touchdown early in the fourth quarter to take a 28–19 lead. Alsheskie later hit his third field goal of the day—a 27-yarder—to bring the Spiders within six at 28–22, but it would prove to be Richmond's final points of the afternoon.
The Spiders now head into their bye week and will return to action on Saturday, Nov. 1, when they host Fordham at 2:00 p.m. at Robins Stadium.
