MONTERREY, MEXICO — Quin Polin holds a one-shot lead halfway through the Monterrey Collegiate Classic after playing the event's first 27 holes in 7-under par Friday. Polin, a junior, was 1-over par at the turn in the first round before rallying to make five birdies and four pars on the back nine for a 4-under 68. He followed that with three more birdies on opening nine of the second round, giving him a one-shot lead midway through the event, which will conclude with 27 holes on Saturday.
Polin helped the Spiders to a team score of 9-under par, tied with Atlantic 10 rival VCU for second in the 12-team field. The Spiders are behind only UTRGV, who is 16-under par after one-and-a-half rounds.
Polin's opening 4-under 68 matched the lowest round of his college career and was three shots better than his low round this fall entering the event, a 1-under 71 in the second round at Georgia Southern's Bash in the Boro earlier this month.
"I just trusted my swing after a lesson with my coach, and I knew that I had all the pieces I just needed to put them together," said Polin.
Polin is one of three Spiders in red figures along with sophomore Carson Baez and junior Jack LaPiana.
Baez is tied for eighth place among the 71 names on the individual leaderboard at 4-under par. He's played the par 5s at Club Campestre in a combined 6-under par, tied for second best in the field.
LaPiana is in 17th place at 2-under par. He opened with a 2-under 70 and is even par through nine holes in the second round.
Freshman Lucas Rizo-Patron, the reigning Atlantic 10 Men's Golf Rookie of the Week, is tied for 50th at 4-over par, and senior Drew Carlin is tied for 64th at 8-over par.
Competing as an individual, junior Parker Moellinger is tied for 53rd at 5-over par.
As a group, the Spiders played the par 3s in 1-over par Friday, best in the field.
Richmond will be seeking its second win of the fall season Saturday after the Spiders tied for first at the season-opening Metropolis Intercollegiate last month.
