Third Quarter Surge Lifts Spiders to Comeback Capital Cup Victory
11/22/2025 | Football
Williamsburg, Va. – Three consecutive touchdown drives in the third quarter lifted the University of Richmond football team to a 28–21 come-from-behind victory over rival William & Mary in the 2025 playing of the "Oldest Rivalry in the South," the Capital Cup Presented by C&F Bank.
William & Mary led 14–0 at halftime, but a strong start to the second half by Richmond produced three straight scoring drives, giving the Spiders a 21–14 lead by 2:14 in the third quarter.
After a three-and-out on their opening drive, William & Mary punted, and Richmond muffed the return, giving the Tribe possession at the Richmond 47-yard line. The Tribe capitalized on the mistake, taking a 7–0 lead at 11:27 in the first quarter when quarterback Tyler Hughes scored on a three-yard run.
In the second quarter, a pass-interference call against Richmond set up William & Mary at the three-yard line, where Rashad Raymond punched in a touchdown one play later at 9:33.
Richmond struggled offensively in the first half, finishing with nearly as many penalty yards as total offense, posting 87 yards against 66 penalty yards.
But the Spiders came out of halftime strong. Richmond reached the end zone for the first time at 10:01 in the third quarter, cutting the deficit to 14–7. The drive began with a career-long 19-yard reception by Cole Schilling, and Kyle Wickersham kept it alive with a six-yard run on fourth-and-three. Short gains moved Richmond to the 11-yard line, where Wickersham connected with Ja'Vion Griffin for an 11-yard touchdown—his fourth straight game with a touchdown catch. Wickersham finished the day 12-of-18 passing for 122 yards and two touchdown passes, while Griffin capped his season with nine catches for 93 yards and the touchdown.
Richmond struck again at 4:57 in the third quarter, starting with a 37-yard pass from Wickersham to Quanye Veney. Gains by Andrew King and Griffin, combined with a 13-yard run by Wickersham, pushed the Spiders deep into William & Mary territory. On third-and-six from the six-yard line, Wickersham found Veney in the end zone for a six-yard touchdown to tie the game at 14.
Richmond then forced the Tribe into a difficult position, highlighted by Braxton Lassiter's sack for an eight-yard loss that set up Richmond's third consecutive scoring drive. William & Mary punted deep in its own territory, and Veney picked up 25 yards on a key run to the 15-yard line. Wickersham capped the drive with a 15-yard touchdown run at 2:14, giving Richmond a 21–14 lead.
Lassiter made another impact on the next defensive series, recording his first career interception after a William & Mary receiver bobbled a pass into his hands, giving Richmond possession at the 47-yard line to start the fourth quarter.
The Tribe responded on their next possession, with Hughes scoring on a seven-yard rush after Tariq Sims broke loose for a 35-yard gain to put William & Mary in scoring position.
Wickersham left the game at the start of the fourth quarter with a knee injury, and Ashten Snelsire came in to finish. Snelsire added a 14-yard touchdown run on third down with 1:56 remaining, putting Richmond ahead 28–21. William & Mary got the ball back with little time and turned it over on downs during a final attempt to tie, allowing Richmond to run out the clock.
Richmond's defense kept the Spiders in the game, recording four sacks and eight tackles for loss. Amir Haskett led the team with 11 tackles, while Camden Byrd (1 sack, 2 TFLs) and Carter Glassmyer each had eight tackles.
The game marked the 136th meeting between the programs and the first as members of separate conferences. William & Mary, currently in the CAA, will join Richmond in the Patriot League in 2026.
Richmond has now won 17 of the last 21 Capital Cup games, including the last three and four of the last five, and holds a three-game edge in the rivalry, now standing at 67–64–4. The Spiders conclude their 2025 campaign— their first in the Patriot League— with a 7–5 (3–4) record.
