Griffin's TD gives Spider the first lead of the game

WASHINGTON – The University of Richmond football team earned a 31-24 comeback victory over Georgetown at Cooper Field after trailing by as many as 11 points in the second half. With the win, Richmond secured its 600th program victory and posted consecutive Patriot League wins for the first time. The Spiders improved to 6-4 overall (3-3 Patriot League), while Georgetown fell to 5-5 (2-3).

On the Spiders' opening drive, Jayden Alsheskie gave Richmond a 3-0 lead with a 34-yard field goal. Georgetown responded with a pair of touchdowns in a span of 2:13 take a 14-3 lead. Spiders starting QB Kyle Wickersham scrambled up the middle for a 38-yard gain on the ensuing drive to put the Spiders in scoring position, and Aziz Foster-Powell narrowed the deficit with a rushing touchdown on the first play of the second quarter.

Richmond trailed 14-10 at the half, and the Hoyas extended their lead with a long touchdown run early in the third quarter. After the teams traded stops, Ashten Snelsire entered the game at QB and led the Spiders on a seven-play, 67-yard drive that ended with a UR "tush push" to assist Snelsire on a one-yard touchdown run.

After a three-and-out from the Hoyas, the Spiders struck from long distance, as Snelsnire found Javion Griffin open down the left sideline for a 45-yard touchdown reception. After Alsheskie's PAT, Richmond led 24-21 with just over 13 minutes remaining.

Georgetown tied the game at 24 with a field goal with six minutes to play, and had a chance to retake the lead after forcing a punt from the Spiders offense. But a missed exchange in the backfield led to a fumble deep in Hoyas territory, and Braxton Lassiter pounded on the loose ball to set up the Spiders in prime scoring position. Moments later, Snelsire found Andrew King up the middle for a 15-yard touchdown for the game-winning score

Aziz Foster-Powell led Richmond in rushing with 64 yards and a touchdown, while Snelsire thew for 114 yards and two touchdowns. Griffin topped the 100-yard receiving mark for the first time this season, ending with 106 yards and a touchdown. Defensively, Peyton Seelmann paced the Spiders with 10 tackles, while Camden Byrd led with two sacks. Donovan Hoilette recorded a career high with 2.5 tackles for loss.

Richmond closes Patriot League play Saturday, Nov. 15, hosting Lafayette at 2 p.m. in Robins Stadium.
