Spiders Earn Two Dual Victories at Richmond Duals Saturday

Hampton, Va. — The University of Richmond swimming and diving team earned dual-meet victories over George Mason and Davidson Saturday at the Richmond Duals at the Hampton Virginia Aquaplex, closing its season-opening weekend with six individual event victories.
The Spiders defeated George Mason 176-121 and Davidson 192-106 while falling to Duquesne 168-131. Richmond competed against the same three Atlantic 10 opponents Friday at the Richmond Invitational, where the Spiders finished second in the four-team field.
Senior Presley Baber and junior Lena Amare led Richmond with two individual victories apiece, while freshman Ellie McNamara and junior Gabbie Primiano added event wins.
Baber swept the sprint freestyle events, winning the 50-yard freestyle in 23.61 seconds and the 100-yard freestyle in 51.35 seconds.
Amare claimed first in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:52.56, added a victory in the 200-yard individual medley with a 2:04.53, and placed third in the 100-yard butterfly with a 56.89 mark.
McNamara earned her first collegiate event victory in the 1,650-yard freestyle, touching the wall in 17:33.53. She led a 1-2 Richmond finish alongside senior Kaitlyn Bauer, who placed second in 17:43.94, more than six seconds ahead of the third-place finisher.
Primiano added her third event victory of the weekend, winning the 200-yard breaststroke in 2:18.98 after sweeping the 50- and 200-yard breaststroke events Friday. She also placed second in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:05.10) and fourth in the 200-yard individual medley (2:08.03).
Sophomore MaryAgnes Smith recorded her second top-three finish of the weekend, taking second in the 200-yard butterfly in 2:08.16. Freshman Maris Marchione followed in fourth with a time of 2:08.90, while fellow newcomer Ansley Neff added a third-place finish in the 500-yard freestyle (5:07.71).
Senior Molly Blanchard placed third in the 200-yard individual medley (2:07.43), giving Richmond two of the top three finishers in the event alongside Amare.
In relay competition, Richmond placed second in the 400-yard freestyle relay with a time of 3:29.25. The Spiders also finished third in the 200-yard medley relay with a 1:44.84.
Richmond will return to competition Friday, Oct. 23, when the Spiders travel to New York to face Fordham at 4 p.m.
