Worcester, Mass. — Richmond scored touchdowns on two of its first three possessions and led Holy Cross at halftime, but the Crusaders used a powerful rushing attack to score 26 unanswered points and defeat the Spiders 33-14 Saturday afternoon at Fitton Field.
The loss moved No. 19/21 Richmond to 6-3 overall and 4-2 in Patriot League play, while Holy Cross improved to 4-5 overall and 4-2 in the conference. The Crusaders rushed for 323 yards and five touchdowns, led by running back Jojo Williams, who finished with 206 yards and three touchdowns on 19 carries.
Richmond opened the game with a seven-play, 66-yard touchdown drive, capped by a three-yard run from Aziz Foster-Powell. Quarterback Ashten Snelsire helped move the Spiders downfield before Foster-Powell reached the end zone to give Richmond a 7-0 lead with 10:53 remaining in the first quarter.
Holy Cross answered on its first possession, driving 61 yards in 11 plays and tying the game on a 21-yard touchdown run by Williams with 3:51 remaining in the opening quarter.
The Spiders capitalized on a Holy Cross special teams mistake later in the period when Kenyez Mungro recovered a muffed punt at the Crusaders' 16-yard line. Three plays later, Snelsire connected with Andreas Hill for an 11-yard touchdown pass, putting Richmond back in front 14-7 with 45 seconds remaining in the first quarter.
The touchdown was Hill's first of the season and gave Richmond 14 first-quarter points, but the Spiders would be held scoreless for the remainder of the afternoon.
Holy Cross cut into Richmond's lead midway through the second quarter, using an eight-play, 73-yard drive to score on a three-yard run by Williams. The Crusaders missed the extra point, allowing the Spiders to maintain a 14-13 advantage entering halftime.
Richmond's defense kept Holy Cross off the scoreboard for much of the third quarter, forcing a three-and-out on the Crusaders' opening possession. The Spiders then moved into Holy Cross territory before a Ned Gray punt pinned the Crusaders at their own four-yard line.
From there, Holy Cross put together the decisive possession of the game, marching 96 yards on 10 plays while taking nearly six minutes off the clock. Jake Croce finished the drive with a two-yard touchdown run to give the Crusaders their first lead of the afternoon, 19-14, with 3:13 remaining in the third quarter. Richmond stopped the ensuing two-point conversion attempt to keep the deficit at five.
The Spiders responded with one of their longest drives of the afternoon, advancing 62 yards in nine plays to reach the Holy Cross 17-yard line. However, Kyle Bitsko's 35-yard field goal attempt missed with 12:44 remaining in the fourth quarter, leaving Richmond trailing by five.
Holy Cross quickly extended its lead when Williams broke free for a 62-yard touchdown run just three plays later. His third touchdown of the game pushed the Crusaders' advantage to 26-14 with 11:04 remaining.
After forcing a Richmond punt, Holy Cross added another touchdown on a nine-play, 66-yard drive, capped by Croce's second two-yard scoring run of the afternoon. The touchdown stretched the lead to 33-14 with 5:01 remaining and put the game out of reach.
Williams' 206 rushing yards nearly matched Richmond's 209 yards of total offense. Holy Cross finished with 415 total yards, including 323 on the ground, and averaged 7.5 yards per rushing attempt.
Richmond was led offensively by Foster-Powell, who rushed for 57 yards and a touchdown on 12 carries while adding three receptions for 22 yards. Snelsire completed 9-of-20 passes for 81 yards and a touchdown and added 46 rushing yards on 11 attempts. Hill led Richmond's receivers with 38 yards and a touchdown on two catches.
Defensively, linebacker Blake Houser led the Spiders with a career-high 15 tackles, including five solo stops and a half tackle for loss. Caleb Geronomi and Jordan Allen each added nine tackles.
The Spiders finished with 128 rushing yards and 81 passing yards, while Holy Cross controlled possession for more than 34 minutes and converted 7-of-11 third-down opportunities. Richmond, which entered the game leading the FCS in sacks per game, did not record one.
The victory was Holy Cross' third straight over Richmond in the all-time series and its second in as many seasons as Patriot League opponents.
Richmond returns to action Saturday, Nov. 7, when the Spiders travel to Villanova for another Patriot League matchup. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
