Deal, LaPiana lead Spiders at Virtues Intercollegiate

NASHPORT, Ohio — A pair of Spiders, one playing his first two competitive rounds for UR, another playing his 78th and 79th, led Richmond in Rounds 1 and 2 of the Virtues Intercollegiate at the Virtues Golf Club Saturday. Grad student Mason Deal, who transferred to UR from Toledo this offseason, and senior Jack LaPiana, kicking off his fourth season in a Spiders uniform, are two of the three golfers tied for fourth at 6-under par following the first two rounds of play.
Deal and LaPiana helped the Spiders to a team score of 9-under par (567) in the first two rounds, third among the 12 teams in the event. With Sunday's final round to play, Richmond trails only Michigan (-26) and Miami (Ohio) [-21] on the team leaderboard.
LaPiana matched the lowest round of his Spiders career in Round 1, shooting a bogey free 66 (-6), tied for the sixth-lowest round in progam history.
"My game feels like it's in a great spot and I had a pretty good summer," said LaPiana. "However, it was very nice starting that way and hopefully I can use that as good momentum for the rest of the season. I also think it's awesome how the team started today, it's great seeing a bunch of birdies and red numbers on the scoreboard!"
Freshman Davis Conaway is tied for 21st at even par (144) after starting his Spiders career with rounds of 71 (-1) and 73 (+1) Saturday. Senior Quin Polin is tied for 33rd at 3-over par (147), while senior Parker Moellinger is tied for 39th at 4-over par (148).
Competing as individuals, senior Tyler Lee is tied for 68th at 12-over par (156), and junior Tommy Sharps is in 76th place at 16-over par (160).
Sunday's final round will begin with a shotgun start at 9 AM.
