Spiders Set Program Records At Penn State, Christopher Newport

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. - Junior Ryan Tolhurst (Wexford, Pa.) and senior Tamika Williams (Southampton, Bermuda) raced to school records to lead the Richmond track & field teams at the Christopher Newport University Captain's Classic and the Penn State University National Open Jan. 26 and 27.
Tolhurst placed third in the 200 meters in 23.16 at Christopher Newport to finish third and improve the previous standard of 23.21 set by Mike Finn (Corona del Mar, Calif.) a week earlier. The race was Tolhurst's first attempt in the event indoors.
Williams won her heat and placed 11th overall in the 500 meters at Penn State in 1:15.90. Williams' performance trimmed her old record (1:17.80) set last year by nearly two seconds.
In other action at the National Open, sophomore Sherry Sikora (Succasunna, N.J.) won the unseeded section of the 3,000 meters in 10:20.35.
At the Captain's Classic, Richmond athletes placed third in three events. The women's distance medley relay team of Bridget Keenan (Newport News, Va.), Andrea Tomforde (East Northport, N.Y.), Maria Jusseaume (Canton, Ohio) and Sarah Taylor (Orono, Maine) took third in 12:42.21. Sophomore Sarah Dill (Ashland, Ky.) ran the 3,000 in 10:45.03 to round out the top three. Junior Justin McElfish (Woodbridge, Va.) placed third in the shot put with a toss of 48 feet, 7.5 inches in his first competition for the Spiders.
Both squads will head to Newark, Del. Feb. 3 and 4 for the University of Delaware Invitational.
