Feb. 11, 2001
NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Different venue, same result. The University of Richmond men's and women's track and field teams continued their record-setting ways at the Christopher Newport University Winter Frolic Feb. 9 and 10. Senior Tamika Williams (Southampton, Bermuda) lowered her school standard in the 400 meters by winning the event by more than a second in 57.78 seconds. Ryan Tolhurst, a junior from Pittsburgh, trimmed the school 200 record for the third time this season by placing second in 22.70. Sherry Sikora ran with the leaders through much of the 5,000 and took 11 seconds off a five-year-old Richmond best. Sikora, a sophomore from Succasunna, N.J., placed third in 17:55.65, displacing the record of 18:06.83 set by Anderson Screws in 1996. Freshman Diane Schreiber (Johnsonburg, Pa.) added another foot to her school 20-pound weight throw record to place sixth in 42-10. Junior Jeff Wilburn (Hingham, Mass.) and freshman Cortney Henschke (Rye, N.H.) tied their own school records to lead the Spiders in the field events. Wilburn cleared 6 feet, 6 inches in the high jump to place third and Henschke cleared 8-6 in the pole vault to tie for eighth place. Sophomore Cathleen Campbell, junior Justin McElfish and three Richmond relay teams scored runner-up finishes. Junior David Blanchard (Richmond, Va.) and freshmen Zach Davis (Midlothian, Va.), Paul Miguel (Hopewell, N.J.) and Tim Caramore (East Greenbush, N.Y.) made up the team. The women's 1,600 and 3,200 relay teams also placed second. Andrea Tomforde (East Northport, N.Y.), Maria Jusseaume (Canton, Ohio), Williams and Bridget Keenan (Newport News, Va.) made up the shorter relay that ran 4:06.33. Erin Brandt (Fanwood, N.J.), Amy Hahn (Pittsburgh, Pa.), Lauren Manero (Wilton, Conn.) and Lyndsey Webber (Sayville, N.Y.) ran the 3,200 relay in 10:08.73. A slew of Richmond athletes took home third-place awards from Newport News. Williams split 2:12 unofficially on the 800 leg of the distance medley relay team to ensure the top-three finish in 12:17.10. Senior Andrea Tomforde and sophomores Keenan and Sarah Taylor (Orono, Maine) joined Williams on the relay. Freshman Julee Wilson (Chester Springs, Pa.) took third in the long jump with a leap of 18-3.
