April 17, 2002
UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - The University of Richmond men's soccer team has selected its captains for the upcoming 2002 soccer season. Juniors Tim Bezbatchenko (Westerville, Ohio/St. Francis DeSales) and Joe Vidmar (Brookfield, Ill./Lyons Township) were voted by their peers to lead the Spiders this fall.
Bezbatchenko appeared in all 21 matches last season, making 19 starts. The midfielder fired 17 shots and finished with one goal and two assists. His lone goal of the season was the game-winner versus La Salle. He also assisted on Eric Dutt's (Melbourne, Fla.) game-winner versus Fairfield and on a Richmond goal at #24 Wake Forest. In his two season's Bezbatchenko has played in every match (40) and has totaled three goals and seven assists for 13 points.
Like his fellow captain, Vidmar also played in every match at the midfield position for the Spiders in 2001. The sophomore started 16 matches and took 16 shots, assisting on Bryan Waggoner's (Medford, N.J.) game-winner in 1-0 victory at George Mason. He has played in 39 matches in his two years, starting 28 of them, and has three career assists.
The Spiders and head coach Jeff Gettler finished 13-6-2, 8-3-0 A-10, last season in their first season of Atlantic 10 competition as the squad advanced to the conference finals. They open their 2002 schedule at Penn State on August 30 as part of the Ohio State Nike Classic.
