June 12, 2002
UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - University of Richmond men's head soccer coach Micah Fisher (Ithaca, N.Y./Ithaca), Peter Hassler (Westford, Vt./Mt. Mansfield Union), Chris Lahoud (Ft. Worth, Texas/Arlington Heights), Brian McDonald (Kisdorf, Germany/KBS Norderstedt), Reed Milliken (Dallas, Texas/Trinity Christian Academy), Colin Vint (Fairfax, Va./Chantilly), and Steven Wolfe (Richmond, Va./Benedictine). In addition, the Spiders have added sophomore transfer Warren Cunningham (Durban, South Africa/Durban) and junior transfer Jason Bailey (Raleigh, N.C./Fuquay-Varina). A brief biography on each of the nine newcomers follows:
Micah Fisher, 5'10 160lbs, played his high school soccer at Ithaca High School. Fisher was a two-year captain and All-Conference selection and a four-year member of the New York West ODP '83 team. Very technical and skillful with good vision, Fisher should be able to provide depth in the midfield and attacking positions.
Incoming goalkeeper Peter Hassler, 6'4 200 lbs, played high school soccer at Mt. Mansfield where he earned All-State honors. A three-sport athlete, his athleticism and competitiveness will allow him to challenge for a spot on the field next fall.
Chris Lahoud, a 6-3 190lbs defender, lives in Ft. Worth Texas, where he attends Arlington Heights High School. Lahoud currently plays club soccer for the outstanding Solar '84 Soccer Club who advanced to the championship match of the Super Group at the 2002 Dallas Cup. His strength in defending, ability in the air and tackling lend him to make an immediate impact for the Spiders in the fall. Planning on studying pre-med while at Richmond.
Brian McDonald, 6'1 190 lbs, most recently played for Kisdorf in Northern Germany. McDonald is a solid marking back, with good heading and tackling abilities. McDonald should be able to challenge for a spot in the back line immediately.
Reed Milliken, a 6'0 160lbs defender is a Dallas, Texas native. Milliken plays his club soccer for the '84 Comets. At Trinity Christian Academy Milliken was a two-time All-State selection. Milliken's technical and tactical abilities will be a good addition to the Spider defense.
The 6'3 180lbs Colin Vint played center forward and captained his highly talented club team, Gunston Team America out of Northern, Va. Hailing from Fairfax, Va., Vint led his Chantilly High School team to the State Final in his junior year. Vint was a 2001 First-Team All-District and Second-Team All Region selection. A strong forward, Vint's play in the air, his finishing and ability to hold the ball will be a big addition to the Spider attack this fall
A native of Richmond, Va., the 6'1 165lbs Steven Wolfe played his high school soccer at Benedictine High School. As a senior he captioned his team to the state championship, in the process earning First-Team All-State honors. Wolfe was a member of the highly competitive '84 Richmond Strikers Soccer Club. A good player on the flanks with a nose for the goal, Wolfe should help the Spiders in a wide midfield position
Warren Cunningham, 6'2 185lbs, grew up playing youth soccer in South Africa. A member of the U-19 Durban provincial and state teams, Cunningham attended NAIA power NOVA in the fall of 2001 where he led the team in goals and total points while posting a 12-5-3 record. Cunningham was named to the All-Conference and All-Region teams. His maturity, experience and goal scoring ability should bolster the Spider attack. Will study Business at Richmond.
Junior transfer Jason Bailey will make an immediate impact for the Spiders in the fall of 2002. The 5'10, 165lbs defender played in 30 matches during his two years at Campbell University. Originally from Fuquay-Varina, Bailey joined the Spider program in the spring of 2002 where he started at left back. Bailey's addition solidifies an already experienced defense. Will continue to study Business at the E. Claiborne Robins School of Business at Richmond.
The Spiders finished the 2001 season with a record of 13-6-2 and advanced to the Atlantic 10 championship match in their first year in the new conference. They open their 2002 season on August 30th versus Penn State in a first round match of the Ohio State Classic.
