UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. -The University of Richmond Department of Athletics unveiled a new family of logo marks Thursday evening at an Athletic Season Kickoff in the Heilman Dining Center.
The athletics logos consist of an updated primary logo, a new secondary logo and a new word mark. The updated primary mark is that of the traditional tilted eight-legged Spider silhouette. The new secondary mark is a two-dimensional rendering of a more aggressive arachnid viewed from a head-on angle. The new word mark for the Richmond Spiders features a more contemporary typeface that denotes power and speed -- two attributes that the University of Richmond athletics program consistently strives for. The official athletics colors, blue and red, will remain the same.
The updated Spider silhouette, new two-dimensional Spider and new word mark were designed to appeal to both the athletic program's traditional die-hard supporters and a new generation of sports fans. In addition, the new designs will allow for more variety in Spider merchandize and sports apparel.
"These logos reflect the excellent tradition of Spider athletics with the commitment to compete successfully at the highest levels of intercollegiate athletics," said Director of Athletics Jim Miller.
Richmond has signed with Licensing Resource Group (Winston Salem, N.C.) to trademark all existing and new logos. Other schools affiliated with LRG include Texas A&M, Arizona State, Princeton, and Vanderbilt.
The new marks are a design of Silverman Group, Inc., a full service marketing and brand development agency based in New Haven, Conn. Clients include the NHL's Washington Capitals and Dallas Stars and the WBNA's Charlotte Sting and Orlando Rage. The firm has associations with some of the nation's sports elite, including the National Football League (NFL), the Professional Golf Association (PGA) and World Cup Soccer.
