June 18, 2003
UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - University of Richmond head men's soccer coach Charlie Bird (Sharon, Conn.), Joe Dincecco (Marshfield, Mass.) and Andre Townsend (Kingston, Jamaica) will join the squad for the 2003 season.
Bird, a transfer from Boston University, was a two-year starter in the goal at the Hotchkiss School before receiving a medical redshirt from the Terriers last season.
"I am excited about the addition of Charlie to our team," Gettler commented. "I think that he will make our goalkeeping position stronger and I expect him to become an outstanding player and team leader in the near future."
Dincecco, who will play at the midfield or forward position, was a four-year starter and two-year captain at Marshfield High School. A three-year Olympic Development Program (ODP) State Team member, he also spent one year with the Region I ODP Team.
"Joe is a talented attacking player who combines great vision and passing with outstanding pace and dribbling ability. He will give us added flair as either an attacking midfielder, wide player or forward."
At back, Townsend earned All-New England Honors while serving as team captain at Holderness School (NH). The Boston Globe All-Scholastic Prep Player of the Year, Townsend was also named the District II MVP in the Prep All-Star game. In addition, Townsend was selected to the Jamaican U-20 National Team pool.
"Andre combines great skill and touch on the ball with outstanding quickness. We expect him to make an immediate impact in our team as a defender who can attack out of the back."
Richmond opens the 2003 season on Friday, August 29 when they face Clemson in the VCU Nike/ALLTEL Classic at Sports Backers Stadium.
