Football Faces Challenging Slate In 2004

Feb. 5, 2004
UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - A contest against ACC-power North Carolina State as well as three in-state rivalry games, including a Homecoming date with James Madison on Oct. 23, highlights the challenging University of Richmond 2004 football schedule.
After playing Virginia in 2000 and 2001, the Spiders return to I-A and ACC competition when they travel to Carter-Finley Stadium in Raleigh for the season opener against the Wolfpack. Richmond is 1-16-1 all-time against N.C. State but they have not played since a 27-21 defeat in Raleigh on Sept. 5, 1981.
A trip to Lexington to battle VMI on Sept. 11 marks the first of three games against Virginia schools. Richmond defeated the Keydets 35-25 at UR Stadium last fall.
The Spiders begin Atlantic 10 competition when they face UMass in Amherst on Sept. 18. It will be the second consecutive season that Coach Reid returns to the sidelines he guided for nine years.
Richmond invites Lafayette to UR Stadium for the home opener on Sept. 25, having faced the Leopards one time, a 33-0 loss in the 1922 season opener. A bye week waits on Oct. 2 before the Spiders host Maine on Oct. 9.
Richmond plays at Villanova for the first time since the 2000 season on Oct. 16 before James Madison comes to UR Stadium for Homecoming and Family Weekend on Oct. 23. The Spiders have defeated the Dukes each of the past three times at UR Stadium.
A road game at Hofstra (Oct. 30) precedes Richmond's first-ever contest against Towson, who joins the Atlantic 10 this year, at UR Stadium on Nov. 6.
Defending national champion Delaware invades Richmond for Senior Day when the Spiders honor their senior class before the final regular-season home game on Nov. 13.
The 114th all-time meeting between Richmond and William & Mary, the fourth oldest rivalry in college football, completes the slate in Williamsburg on Nov. 20.
