Dave Clawson Finalizes Inaugural Coaching Staff

UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - Richmond head football coach Dave Clawson completed his inaugural coaching staff by hiring five more assistant coaches on Tuesday.
One of Clawson's new assistants is Ben Albert who coached at Richmond from 1997-2000. The Spiders' special teams coordinator and defensive line coach returns to campus after spending the last two seasons at his alma mater, Massachusetts.
Bill Durkin, who has spent the last four years guiding the Richmond running backs, moves to the offensive line where he was an All-American at UMass. Ken Farrar, an All-Atlantic 10 honoree on the Richmond offensive line, also returns to his alma mater.
"I am very excited about the caliber of these coaches and am confident that we have put together an exceptional staff," Clawson said. "These are not only good coaches, but great people. Our players will really enjoy working with them."
Ben Albert
Special Teams Coordinator/Defensive Line
Ben Albert returns to Richmond after serving as the Spiders' defensive line coach in 1997 and their linebackers coach from 1998-2000. After leaving Richmond, Albert spent one season coaching the defensive line at Rutgers (2001) before joining his alma mater (UMass) for the past two years.
Albert spearheaded the special teams' efforts as well as leading the inside linebackers while on the Minuteman staff. In his four years at Richmond, the Spiders compiled a 32-17 mark and won two Atlantic 10 Championships (1998 and 2000).
A 1995 graduate of UMass, Albert was a three-year starter on the defensive line and earned All-Yankee Conference honors. He collected 187 tackles and made 14 sacks during his career.

Bill Durkin
Offensive Line
A Spider assistant for the past seven seasons, Bill Durkin moves from running backs to the offensive line. A position very familiar to Durkin, he earned First Team All-America honors while playing on the UMass line.
During his four-year tenure as the Richmond running backs coach, Durkin led a group that recorded three of the top six single-season rushing efforts. In 2000, Richmond set a program record with 2,932 yards on the ground, followed by the second-best mark of 2,748 in 2001. The Spiders posted the sixth-highest total in 2002 with 2,185 rushing yards.
Chosen as one of the Yankee Conference's Top 50 Players of all time, Durkin spent time with the New England Patriots and the Rhein Fire of NFL Europe as well as the Shreveport Pirates and Baltimore Stallions of the Canadian Football League.

Marcus Satterfield
Wide Receivers
After spending the last two seasons at Tennessee, Dave Clawson Richmond staff.
Satterfield spent the last two years working with the offense and special teams units for Phillip Fulmer and the Volunteers. Prior to his Knoxville stint, Satterfield coached the wide receivers at Chattanooga for three seasons.
A three-year starter at wide-out for East Tennessee State, Satterfield made 124 catches and 11 touchdowns for the Bucs. He helped lead the team to the I-AA playoffs in 1996.

Jay Bateman
Assistant Secondary
Jay Bateman was the youngest head coach in college football when he took over the Siena College program's reigns in 2000. No stranger to Virginia, Bateman coached at Hampden-Sydney and played at Randolph-Macon prior to his post in Loudonville, N.Y.
Before coaching the Saints, Bateman was in charge of the linebackers and defensive line at Hampden-Sydney. He also served as the head strength coach and recruiting coordinator for the Tigers.
An All-American and two-time All-Conference linebacker at Randolph-Macon, Bateman served as the team captain during his senior season. After graduation in 1995, Bateman began his coaching career at Benedictine High School in Richmond.

Ken Farrar
Assistant Offensive Line
A three-year starter on the offensive line at Richmond (1999-2001), Ken Farrar returns to his alma mater and will help coach his former position.
A two-time All-Conference honoree, Farrar started his final 35 games as a Spider. He helped a rushing attack that posted a program-record 2,932 rushing yards in 2000 and the second-best performance (2,748) in 2001.
