April 5, 2004
PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - With only the spring season remaining, the University of Richmond department of athletics leads the race for its second consecutive Atlantic 10 Commissioner's Cup by 16.5 points over second-place Saint Joseph's.
A regular-season title in field hockey and Atlantic 10 Championships in cross country, field hockey and swimming and diving have propelled the Spiders to the top of the women's rankings with 54 points, 15.5 better than Rhode Island who is second.
Richmond trails St. Joe's by just 0.5 points on the men's side with baseball (May 26-29), men's golf (April 30-May 2), outdoor track & field (May 1-2) and men's tennis (April 8-10) still to be decided. Men's soccer captured the A-10 regular-season title.
On the women's side, tennis (April 16-18), outdoor track & field (May 1-2) and lacrosse (May 7-8) still have their championships on the horizon.
The Spiders won their first Commissioner's Cup, awarded to the best all-around athletic program in the Atlantic 10, in 2002-03.
