UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. -
Dear Jim,
With Spring just around the corner, that can only mean one thing--Spider Baseball!! I think Coach Atkins is absolutely giddy over their prospects for this upcoming season, which brings me to my question. I recall there being a two or three year plan to make improvements to Pitt Field. Where do we stand now with regard to those plans and are there any further improvements to be made in the near future?

Randy:
It does seem as though Coach Atkins is excited about this season. He sees plenty of talent on this year's team, but it may be the youngest roster he has ever coached at Richmond. That's probably why our schedule is front-loaded with home games at Pitt Field. We play 17 our first 23 games at home - so get out and the Spiders in action!
The team, and the athletic department, is thrilled with the first phase of our Pitt Field renovations. The new dugouts are "big-league" with plenty of room for the players and coaches. The new brick wall and mesh backstop behind home plate that replaced the old chain-link fence are as eye-pleasing as they are functional.
The baseball teams' locker room in the Robins Center was renovated, and now includes spacious wooden lockers and a lounge area with big screen TV and stereo system.
The next phase for Pitt Field would be a "fan zone" constructed beyond the right field fence, where, as you know, many spectators already sit to watch the action. We'd like to turn this area into a more comfortable and fan-friendly seating section that will enhance the current atmosphere. Fund-raising is currently on-going for this project.
The phase beyond that will include a new press box with concession stand and restrooms. We'll keep you updated.
Remember, our first home game is Wednesday February 23 against VMI at 2pm. Hope to see you at the game!
Sincerely,
Jim
