April 21, 2005
UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - University of Richmond juniors Araceli Gil (Santa Barbara, Calif.) and Colin Vint (Fairfax, Va.) were both named 2005 Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholars as announced by the publication Black Issues in Higher Education. Gil was selected to the Women's Basketball Third Team while Vint was honored to the Men's Soccer Second Team.
Black Issues In Higher Education established the Sports Scholars Awards to honor undergraduate students of color who have made achieving both academically and athletically a winning combination. To be included, students have to compete in an intercollegiate sport; maintain a cumulative grade-point average of at least 3.2; and be active on their campuses or in their communities.
Gil, the Spiders' starting point guard, averaged 7.4 points per game and led the team in three-point field goal percentage (.393) last season. She ranked second on the team in assists (72) and hit a pair of free throws with seven seconds remaining in overtime to give Richmond a 78-77 win at Dayton (2/27). An accounting major, she holds a 3.35 cumulative GPA.
Vint led the Spiders with 15 points on five goals and five assists in 2004. The team's middle attacker was also honored for the second consecutive year as a First Team All-Atlantic 10 player. He has compiled a 3.25 cumulative GPA while majoring in psychology.
Gil and Vint were two of three student-athletes from the Atlantic 10 conference to earn the accolade.
