Spider Men's Soccer Moves Through Spring Prep With Another Tie Against James Madison

April 7, 2005
UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - The Spider men's soccer squad continued their spring campaign with a match against James Madison, a team which was nationally ranked and finished 15-3-1 in 2004. For the second time this spring, the Spiders started with seven freshman, two sophomores, and two juniors. Early in the first half JMU got after the Spiders by winning two corners and having a majority of the possession.
Slowly Richmond climbed into the game as it began to tighten up in the back with the leadership and tough stellar play of junior Chris Lahoud. The center-midfield pair of freshmen Anders Walleck and Kyle Richards began to take over the middle of the park, and Richmond started to string passes together advancing into the Dukes' defensive end.
Richmond won two successive corners, then freshman Steven Wolfe got around the left flank and whipped in a cross to the JMU box, but the Spiders couldn't get on the end of it to close out the first half.
The second half started brightly as the Spiders picked up where they left off. Richmond was awarded a free kick which Wolfe drove just over the bar. Minutes later Wolfe was played into the box and his shot went off the inside of the post and across the goal before it was cleared.
Sophomore Brent Ballard headed a ball just wide of the post from a Wolfe corner. JMU settled into a bit of possession before Richmond closed the half with a flurry of chances. Wolfe earned two more free kicks which bounced around in the Dukes' box before being cleared. Thomas was played behind the defense and chipped the JMU keeper, but the ball fell just wide of the goal.
In goal, freshman Joe Dincecco and freshmen Trey Thornton gave JMU no real chances to get to Sciocchetti.
Richmond's next spring action will take place Sunday, April 10, against UNC-Greensboro and Virginia Tech.
