Spiders Hold Spring Game On Saturday

April 8, 2005
A successful spring season writes its final chapter tomorrow afternoon when second-year head coach Dave Clawson leads his football program into the annual Spring Game at 2 p.m., on campus at First Market Stadium.
The most intriguing storyline of this year's spring has been the development of three quality quarterbacks. Incumbent Stacy Tutt, entering his final collegiate season, has been strong and consistent, proving elusive and dangerous out of the backfield.
Redshirt freshman Will Healy has also played well, throwing for 163 yards in last Saturday's scrimmage. It has been the presence of true freshman Levi Brown, more specifically his cannon arm, which raised eyebrows. Brown was 11-for-13 for 173 yards and two touchdowns last Saturday, including scoring tosses of 36 and 51 yards.
Injuries to key contributors have opened the door for increased competition and many more reps for student-athletes battling for playing time. Especially on the defense, many young players have raised their level and impressed the coaching staff.
Saturday's scrimmage will pit the offense versus the defense. In a unique scoring system, the offense will gain normal points for scoring plays plus one point for every first down. The defense earns six points for a turnover, two points for holding the offense and one point for blocking an extra-point or stopping a two-point conversion.
The Spider Club will host a picnic for its current members and prospective members at 1:30 p.m. in First Market Stadium.
The concession stand will be open for all Spider fans. Next year's schedule and season-ticket information will also be provided on the official game program.
