Football Announces 2005 Captains

UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - Seniors Brian Burnette, David Freeman, John Gromin and Stacy Tutt will serve as team captains for the 2005 season, second-year head coach Dave Clawson announced prior to the annual Spring Game on Saturday.
One of the best all-around athletes in the Atlantic 10, Stacy Tutt assumes the role for the second consecutive season. Tutt started all 11 games at quarterback last year and provided several highlights with his arm and his legs. The Tappahannock, Va. native threw for 2,156 yards and 14 touchdowns last fall.
Running back David Freeman and center John Gromin also lead an offense that returns eight starters. Freeman ran for 968 yards and five touchdowns in 11 starts. Gromin anchors an offensive line that returns three starters. He started all 11 games at center last season.
Linebacker Brian Burnette is the lone captain from the defense. The Chesterfield, Va. native is one of nine starters returning on that side of the ball. In his first full season at linebacker in 2004, Burnette made 81 tackles, including four for loss.
The 2005 season kicks-off at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 1 when the Spiders host Massachusetts in UR Stadium.
