UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - Touchdown drives from Stacy Tutt and Will Healy led the Richmond offense to a 32-28 victory over the Spider defense in the second-annual spring game played Saturday at First Market Stadium on the University of Richmond campus.
Before a near capacity crowd of 2,409 fans, the offense combined for 193 yards passing and 177 yards rushing to secure victory. Using second-year head coach Dave Clawson's unique scoring system, the Spiders earned 12 points for two touchdowns, one point for a successful PAT and received one point for each of its 19 first downs.
Defensive lineman Sherman Logan enjoyed a dominating day, making seven tackles, including five sacks for 31 yards. Linebacker Chaz Curtis led the defense with 10 tackles, while Damien McCallum and Anthony Dabney both garnered eight stops. The defense's 28 points came from holding the offense on 14 drives.
After Tutt's first drive stalled, Healy marched the Spiders 70 yards on 12 plays for the game's first score. After extending the drive by completing a nine-yard pass on fourth-and-seven to Matt Hale, Healy connected with Jeff Ritch for a nine-yard touchdown. Healy finished the drive 3-for-5 for 22 yards.
Running back John Crone, who led Richmond with 20 carries for 97 yards, ran the ball four times for 42 yards on that drive. He ran 27 yards on his first carry.
On the strength of the touchdown, the offense led 15-12 after the first quarter. An eight-two advantage in the second quarter pushed the defense to a 20-17 halftime lead.
Tutt opened the third quarter with a touchdown drive that gave the offense a commanding 12-2 run in the stanza and command of the game. Tutt guided the offense through a 13-play, 70-yard drive that culminated in a five-yard touchdown to Hale. Tutt finished the afternoon 10-for-19 for 72 yards.
