May 10, 2005
UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - Behind five post-season championships and one regular season title, the University of Richmond has clinched its third consecutive Atlantic 10 Commissioner's Cup. In addition, the Spiders have won their third straight women's cup.
Richmond has currently earned 121 points with baseball as the only sport still competing in conference play. Rhode Island, who has finished as the runner-up each of the past five years, is in second place with 107 points.
"We are very pleased at our overall performance within the Atlantic 10 and on the national level," senior associate director of athletics David Walsh said. "We are poised for even greater things in the near future."
The Spiders earned 77.5 points on the women's side, seven points more than runner-up Massachusetts. The Spider men are currently tied for fourth place with George Washington, each tallying 43.5 points.
Richmond has earned the same number of points on the women's side for the past three seasons. This year, the Spiders earned a regular-season title in field hockey and captured championships in field hockey, swimming & diving, tennis and lacrosse.
On the men's side, the tennis team earned their second straight post-season title.
The Spiders earned six NCAA berths this year, advancing in women's basketball, field hockey, lacrosse, women's swimming and both men's and women's tennis.
The Commissioner's Cup is awarded annually to the best overall athletic department in the Atlantic 10 Conference. In each of the conference's 22 championship sport, points are given in descending order of finish, equal to the number of teams which participate in each sport. Regular season standings are used in round-robin sports: baseball, men's and women's basketball, field hockey, women's lacrosse, men's and women's soccer, softball and women's volleyball.
