Richmond hits the road for the first time in the 2005 season Saturday, Sept. 10, when it travels to Easton, Pa., to face the Lafayette Leopards. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. at Lafayette's Fisher Field. The game's radio broadcast can be heard on the Spider Radio Network and at RichmondSpiders.com. Bob Black will handle the play-by-play with former Richmond defensive standout, Jasmonn Coleman, as analyst and Matt Smith on the sidelines.
The Spiders (0-1) will be looking for their first win of the 2005 season, and against Lafayette (1-0) in the all-time series which dates back to 1922. Last season the Spiders nearly topped the Leopards at UR Stadium, but an illegal touching call with five seconds remaining halted the Spiders, and allowed Lafayette to escape with a 21-16 win. The Leopards are coming off a 40-21 win against Marist last weekend, and have won three of their last four dating back to the 2004 season.
Richmond is under the direction of second-year head coach Dave Clawson, who has compiled a seven-year career record of 32-38 and a 3-9 mark in two seasons at Richmond. Frank Tavani is in his sixth season with the Leopards. Tavani has compiled a six-year mark of 25-32, all coming at Lafayette.
QUICK OUTS...
-- Sophomore Matt Hale led the Spiders in both rushing (48 yds) and receiving (73 yds) in last week's 19-6 loss to No. 15 Massachusetts.
-- Hale hauled in a team-best six catches against the Minutemen and was part of Richmond's longest rush (48 yds) and catch (27 yds) from scrimmage.
-- Richmond out-gained the UMass Minutemen in the second half last week. The Spiders, trailing 16-0 at the midway point, gained 199 yards, picked up 10 first downs and scored six points in the second half. UMass gained 115 yards, picked up eight first downs and scored three points in the second half.
-- Last season's heartbreaking loss to Lafayette had its positives -- After the Leopards took a 14-0 lead, the Spiders outscored Lafayette, 16-7.
-- The 21-16 setback to the Leopards last season snapped a two-game win streak for the Spiders. Two weeks prior to the Lafayette game Richmond earned its first win under head coach Dave Clawson by downing VMI, 34-7. A week later it travelled to ninth-ranked UMass and upset the Minutemen, 24-14.
-- Richmond sophomore Jon DeWald and Lafayette assistant Sports Information Director Greg Knowlden both attended Muncy High School in Muncy, Pa. DeWald was instructed in summer tennis lessons by Knowlden late in DeWald's high school career.
RICHMOND-LAFAYETTE SERIES
The Richmond-Lafayette series began Sept. 30, 1922, when the Leopards topped the Spiders 34-0 in Easton, Pa... The series went on hiatus until last season when Richmond fell to Lafayette, 21-16, at UR Stadium in Richmond, Va... Lafayette's largest margin of victory in the all-time series is 34-0, in 1922... Last season's loss to the Leopards snapped a two-game win streak for the Spiders, the longest in head coach Dave Clawson tenure at Richmond... Richmond has outscored the Leopards 16-14 over the last three quarters of play in the series... Lafayette leads the all-time scoring tally 55-16... This is the Spiders' first trip to Easton, Pa., since the all-time series opener, Sept. 30, 1922.
A QUICK LOOK AT LAFAYETTE
Picked to finish no better than fifth in the Patriot League a year ago, the Lafayette Leopards and head coach Frank Tavani proved all critics wrong by winning the Patriot League and earning a trip to the NCAA I-AA Playoffs. Lafayette returns 40 letterwinners from last year's team, including 10 on the defensive side. Leading the way is senior linebacker Maurice Bennett, who was a First Team All-Patriot League pick last season after wracking up a league-leading 119 total tackles. In the Leopards season-opener against Marist, Bennett made 7.5 stops, forced one fumble and had a seven-yard sack. Offensively, junior quarterback Brad Maurer emerged late last season leading the the Leopards' to the playoffs. Lafayette lost the 1,218 yards in 2004 from Joe McCourt, but returns a majority of receivers. Last week against Marist, Lafayette picked up 19 first downs on 393 total yards, including 263 rushing and 130 passing. The Leopards limited the Red Foxes to 234 total yards, 45 on the ground and 189 in the air.

SECOND (HALF) EFFORT
Richmond's second half output was considerably better than its first against the Minutemen. The Spiders outrushed UMass 77-62, out-passed UMass 122-35, picked up more first downs (10-8) and outscored UMass 6-3 all in the second half. Richmond's pass defense limited the Minutemen to just 35 yards in the second half compared to 105 in the first. The front seven, on the field for 31:00 total minutes, stopped the UMass run game for just 62 yards in the second half, compared to 85 in the first. Richmond's defensive unit also limited a Massachusetts squad, which was averaging 32.6 points in its last five games, to just 19 points. The Minutemen's 19 points were the fewest scored since James Madison, the 2004 National Champion, held them to seven points, Oct. 9, 2004 (JMU, W, 28-7).
ALL HALE -- Matt Hale
The Spiders went to who was giving them the best Thursday night against UMass -- sophomore receiver Matt Hale. The Ooltewah, Tenn., native led Richmond in both rushing (48) and receiving (73). His one carry of 48 yards came at the beginning of the Spiders lone scoring drive, and was the longest play from scrimmage for the Spiders. In the fourth quarter, Hale hauled in a 27-yard catch, one of his team-leading six receptions. The 27-yard gain in the air was Richmond's longest aerial assault of the evening.
IT'S ALL IN THE FAMILY
The sport of football in the Parziale family might be considered a requirement. Junior Pete Parziale, who is back after a knee injury sidelined him the entire 2004 season, has three brothers who also play college football. His youngest brother, Pat, is listed as a 6-0, 208 pound freshman linebacker for the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. Ben, a sophomore just down I-64 at Virginia, is a 5-11, 209 pound safety for the Cavaliers.
STREAKS OF CONCERN
-- Senior Harry Wilson needs just 32 receptions to pass James Church for 10th all-time in receiving at Richmond. Wilson caught a team-leading 56 balls in 2004.
-- Senior Chris Radford has booted his last three punts an average of 53.3 yards. All three have distances over 40 yards, including a career-best 64 yarder. Against UMass he landed one inside the 10-yard line.
-- Freshman Will Healy completed his first eight pass attempts against UMass. The Chattanooga, Tenn., native made his collegiate debut in the third quarter against the Minutemen.
SAY IT -- DUH-REE-VOE
Danny Desriveaux -- It may look like Deveraux, and you may think to say Dezz-ri-voe, but the transfer wide receiver from UConn wants to be known as Danny Duh-REE-voe. The Canadian (Laval, Quebec City), was born in Haiti then moved to Canada where his parents spoke French growing up. The 5-9, 195 pounder graduated from UConn with a finance degree in 3.5 years, and is now working towards his master's in business administration. On the field, he was redshirted in 2002 as a freshman for the Huskies, then did not see action in 2003 and limited action in 2004.
IT'S ALL COMING BACK TO ME
A total of 95 percent of last season's rushing yards will return this season for the Spiders. Seniors David Freeman and Stacy Tutt as well as sophomore Tim Hightower accounted for almost 93 percent of the Spiders rushing carries in 2004 -- they all return in 2005.
In the passing game, the Spiders return 83 percent of the receiving yards, largely by senior Harry Wilson and sophomores Arman Shields and Andy Lehatto. The trio, along with Freeman and Hightower and a few others accounted for 79 percent of the catches in 2004 -- they all return in 2005.
Defensively, 85 percent of Richmond's total tackles are back in 2005. That number includes 13 of the Top-15 on last season's team. Junior Adam Goloboski and Lance Gray both garnered more than 100 total tackles in 2004 -- they both return in 2005.
FREEMAN, GOLOBOSKI NOTCH PRESEASON HONORS
Richmond senior David Freeman and junior Adam Goloboski were both selected to the 2005 Atlantic 10 Preseason All-Conference team, as it was announced, Aug. 3, at the A-10 Conference Football Media Day, held at The Crowne Plaza Hotel in Warwick, R.I.
Freeman, a Third Team All-Conference honoree following the 2004 season, rushed for 958 yards last season, eclipsing the 100-yard barrier in four games. The senior ranked third in the league in 2004, averaging 85.9 yards per game, while his total for the season ranked ninth all-time at Richmond. One of this year's four captains, Freeman rushed for 201 yards in the Lafayette game in 2004, which placed him 11th in the Spiders' single-game rushing records.
Goloboski is one of Richmond's seven returnees to its defensive front. The Hereford, Md., native led the Spiders with 116 tackles in 2004, including 7.5 for loss. The linebacker was an All-Conference third team selection last season after ranking third in the conference with 10.5 tackles per game.
GOLOBOSKI PICKS UP HONOR FROM 1-AA.ORG
Richmond junior linebacker Adam Goloboski added to his list of preseason honors, Aug. 16, by being named Preseason First Team All-Atlantic 10 by I-AA.org.
The Hereford, Md., native also was listed second among the league's Top-5 linebackers as picked by the publication.
The 2005 Preseason All-Atlantic 10 selection led the Spiders with 116 total tackles in 2004, including 51 solo stops. One of Richmond's returning front seven, Goloboski ranked third in the A-10 last season with 10.5 stops which led to Third Team All-Conference honors following the season.
