Richmond's Howard Named Atlantic 10 Special Teams Player of the Week

Oct. 15, 2006
UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - Freshman Andrew Howard earned his first career honor when he was named the Atlantic 10 Special Teams Player of the Week, league officials announced Sunday evening. The Richmond, Va., native continued his strong placekicking performance in Saturday's win at Rhode Island, and filled in for injured freshman Brian Radford on the punting duties in Kingston.
Howard, a Hermitage High School graduate, logged a 44-yard punt on his first career attempt pinning the Rams at their own 11-yardline in the second quarter Saturday. The punt, which was followed by a three-play defensive stand by the Spiders, led to a 25-yard field goal by Howard. After a punt by the Rams and an 18-yard return by senior Ryan Mace, the Spiders moved the ball to the Rhode Island eight-yardline for Howard to hit his seventh field goal of the season.
The true freshman converted on all four PAT's Saturday in Kingston to move his streak to 22-straight to begin his career. Howard, with the 25-yard field goal, is now 7-for-8 in three-point tries with his only miss coming on a 33-yard attempt against Northeastern.
In Saturday's contest, Howard recorded his first two career punts for an average of 36.0 yards, and landed one inside the opponent's 20-yardline.
The 10th-ranked Spiders, 5-1 on the season and 2-1 in Atlantic 10 play, will host their next two games at UR Stadium. The first, against Delaware this Saturday, Oct. 21, is slated for 6 p.m. Tickets to see Richmond take on the Blue Hens as well as all remaining home games, are available online at RichmondSpiders.com, calling 1-877-SPIDER-1 or visiting the Robins Center ticket office.
