Spider Student-Athletes Rank Among Nation's Best

April 6, 2006
UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. -
The NCAA recently released its three reports that measure the academic success of student-athletes (the Federal Graduation Rates Report, the Graduation Success Rate Report, and the Academic Progress Rate Report). Results show that the University of Richmond is a model institution for both academic and athletic success.
According to the Federal Graduation Rate Report, eighty-four percent (84%) of the university's student-athletes who matriculated between 1995 and 1998 received their baccalaureate degree. This percentage stands 11th among all NCAA Division I institutions and 1st among all Virginia institutions, both public and private.
The NCAA's newly developed Graduation Success Rate (GSR) enhances the Federal report by including both those student-athletes who entered the institution as mid-year enrollees and those who transferred from another institution, while excluding student-athletes who left Richmond but would have been academically eligible had they remained. The University of Richmond tied for fifth nationally among all NCAA Division I institutions with a GSR score of 97%.
The NCAA's third measure is the Academic Progress Rate (APR), introduced last year to serve as a real-time assessment of each teams' academic performance. To calculate an APR score, each student-athlete can earn per semester a total of two points, one for maintaining his or her eligibility and a second point for remaining at the institution. A final APR percentage reflects a team's accrued points divided by its total possible points.
The current data represents Richmond's combined APR scores for the 2003-04 and 2004-05 academic years, in which fifteen of our nineteen teams posted APR scores above their sport's national average. Moreover, five teams (men's cross country, men's indoor track, men's outdoor track, men's soccer and men's tennis) received a Public Recognition Award from the NCAA for ranking among the top tenth percentile within their respective sport.
