On-campus Stadium Campaign Nears $15,000,000

The dream is on the move to becoming reality. Nearly 75 percent of the funds needed for construction of an on-campus stadium have been raised. With seven months remaining until a December 31, 2006 deadline, $14,566,200 have been committed towards the needed $20 million for the facility that will host football, men's & women's soccer, women's lacrosse, and men's & women's track & field competition.
"The support from our donors has been impressive," said Assistant Director of Athletics-Development, Brent Schneider. "We have more than 150 commitments of $2,000 or more. More than 500 Spider Seats have been purchased and we are hearing from people everyday who are interested in supporting this important project."
A recent major commitment came from local Richmond law firm Cowan Owen. Joe Owen, partner with Cowan Owen, was a scholarship football player who received a B.S. degree from Richmond in 1972. "The partners at Cowen Owen, most of whom attended law school at Richmond, feel strongly that the on-campus stadium will greatly enhance the University community," said Owen. "So, the firm is proud to give our support to make this on-campus stadium a reality."
"There is light at the end of the on-campus stadium fundraising tunnel," added Schneider, "but we still have a long way to go. I would encourage any individual or company who wants to bring football to campus to make a gift to help make it happen."
In July the Spider Club expects to start a grassroots brick campaign to help reach the $20 million dollar goal.
Brent Schneider and Joe Owen are scheduled to appear on ESPN Radio 950's "The Drive" Thursday May 25. The program will air live from 4-7pm at Shula's 2 in the Sheraton West Hotel on Broad Street in conjunction with the the Spider Basketball Signing Party event also at Shula's 2.
