Spider Football Begins Season Ranked No. 15 By Sports Network

Aug. 7, 2006
UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - The defending Atlantic 10 Champions picked up 835 total votes in the Sports Network's preseason poll and are ranked No. 15 to begin the 2006 season. The Spiders, who return nine offensive and seven defensive starters from the 2005 season, begin preseason camp practice Monday, Aug. 7, with a practice at 6:30 p.m.
"I think the rankings speak to the quality of the Atlantic 10 Conference," head coach Dave Clawson said. "To have nearly five teams in the Top-15 nationally is phenomenal. Our goal is to be one of the final 16 teams playing for the national title at the end of the season."
The Spiders are one of five Atlantic 10 Conference teams in the publication's preseason Top-25, including No. 2 New Hampshire, No. 8 James Madison, No. 10 Massachusetts and No. 16 Delaware. The 15th-ranked Spiders also are joined by three other A-10 squads which received preseason votes (Hofstra-91, William & Mary-25 and Maine-5).
Richmond opens its 2006 season, Sept. 2, at Duke. Tickets for the 6 p.m. kickoff in Durham, N.C., are available by calling 1-877-SPIDER-1 or visiting the Robins Center ticket office. The Spiders' home opener is slated for Sept. 16 when they host VMI on Family Weekend.
