Jan. 15, 2007
UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - Matthew O'Toole was promoted to first assistant coach for the Richmond men's soccer team after spending the past three seasons as the second assistant for the Spiders, head coach Jeff Gettler announced.
O'Toole has been an assistant coach for the Spiders since 2004, helping the team to a third-place finish in the Atlantic 10 and a berth in the conference semifinals. The Norwell, Mass. native replaces Bryan Waggoner, who took the head coaching job at Randolph College.
"We're happy to have Matt take over for Bryan," Gettler said. "We wish Bryan well, but we think Matt will continue in the roll our assistant coaches have played over the years, doing an outstanding job of providing great coaching, leadership and a fresh perspective to our players and our program."
O'Toole came to Richmond after serving as an assistant coach at Wheaton College in 2002 and 2003. He helped guide the Lions to a 34-9-2 record, the 2003 NEWMAC championship and a berth in the NCAA Division III semi-finals.
O'Toole has a NSCAA Advanced National Coaching License, a NSCAA National Coaching License and a USSF "D" Coaching License. He has coached at the youth, high school and college levels.
After starring at Thayer Academy in Massachusetts, O'Toole was a four-year starter at Providence College, earning NEISL Senior All-Star honors in 2001. He went on to play professionally for five years in the United Soccer League (USL) for the Atlanta Silverbacks, Carolina Dynamo, Connecticut Wolves and the Richmond Kickers, during his stint as assistant coach for the Spiders.
O'Toole has also trained with several MLS clubs and the Bohemians FC of Ireland's Eircom Premier League.
