Quick Slants:
No. 14/15 Richmond is four games into its 125th season of football and its fourth under head coach Dave Clawson.
Winners of three straight, Richmond is back on the road for its fourth times in five games this season. After falling to Vanderbilt in the season-opener, the Spiders rattled off two road wins over Northeastern and Bucknell before beating New Hampshire at UR Stadium last weekend -- Richmond's first home game in 322 days.
Senior RB Tim Hightower, the nation's second-leading rusher, has amassed 782 yards on 79 carries this season (9.9 yds/carry) and rushed for 12 touchdowns. He is a two-time winner of both the CAA Football and National Player of the Week awards.
In three consecutive victories, the Spiders have scored 45 points or more for the first time in school history. Richmond currently ranks No. 3 in the NCAA (FCS) in total offense, fourth in rushing and ninth in scoring offense.
Freshman DB Justin Rogers ranks third in the nation in kickoff returns and is coming off a school-record 222-yard, one-TD performance versus New Hampshire. He is the CAA Football Special Teams Player of the Week and was Rookie of the Week on Sept. 1. He has two KO returns for touchdown this season.
Freshman WR Kevin Grayson is the CAA's second-leading receiver after back-to-back 100-yard performances.
Last Meeting:
Towson tacked 24 points on the 25th-ranked Spiders in the second quarter and rolled to a 31-7 victory at UR Stadium Nov. 11, 2006. Towson QB Sean Schaefer was 22-of-32 for 259 yards and a touchdown pass to lift the visitors to 7-3 overall, 4-3 in the A-10. Richmond (5-5, 2-5) struck first when Ryan Mace recovered a fumble in the end zone, but the offense was held to just 210 yards in the contest. The Spiders intercepted three Schaefer passes.
Up Next:
The Spiders return home for their only homestand of the season -- back-to-back games versus Stony Brook (Oct. 13) and Rhode Island (Oct. 20). Both games kickoff at 3:30 p.m. at UR Stadium.
