Richmond advances to the NCAA FCS Quarterfinals and will face Wofford next Saturday (Dec. 1) in Spartanburg, S.C. The Terriers upset No. 3 Montana today, 23-22, in Missoula, Mont. and will host the quarterfinal match-up versus the Spiders. The game time has not been determined.
Richmond is in the midst of its second playoff appearance in the last three years and the seventh in team history. The Spiders are now 4-5 (2-1 under head coach Dave Clawson) in playoff action and are 2-3 at home in the postseason.
The Spiders have advanced to the NCAA Quarterfinals four times (1984, 2000, 2005 and 2007).
Under fourth-year head coach Dave Clawson, the Spiders improved to 20-0 when scoring 30 points or more, 25-2 when leading at the half, 20-4 when scoring first and 17-7 when playing as a ranked team (11-4 at home).
Richmond is 9-4 versus ranked opponents since 2005, but 5-0 (4-0 against teams ranked 11th or better) this season.
The Spiders reached the 10-win mark for the just the second time in school history (1998)
Eastern Kentucky shares the NCAA record with Montana with its 18th all-time playoff appearance, but first since 1997. The Colonels won the National Championship in 1979 and 1982.
Senior Walter Payton finalist Tim Hightower, who broke Richmond's single-game postseason rushing record with 180 yards, also set the Spiders' single-season and career rushing marks in the win and the single-season all-purpose yards record.
Hightower has rushed for 1,741 yards this season, surpassing the 1,629 Barry Redden ran for in 1981. The 3,529 over his four-year career surpasses the 3,520 by Uly Scott from 1991-94. His total of 1,949 all-purpose yards is also a record, passing the 1,895 by Erwin Matthews in 1987.
Hightower currently owns 12 records (game, season or career) in the Richmond annals.
The Spiders picked off two EKU passes in the game and recovered two fumbles, owning the turnover margin (+4) on the team that led the nation in interceptions and total takeaways. The Colonels entered the game with 24 interceptions and +22 in turnover margin and had forced three or more turnovers in five consecutive games.
David Horton's interception in the first quarter was his second of the season and second in as many games. The sophomore, who was an All-Conference performer as a freshman, now has five picks in his career.
Tonight marked the first meeting all-time between Richmond and Eastern Kentucky in football.
