Quick Slants:
No. 25 Richmond is three games into its 125th season of football and its fourth under head coach Dave Clawson.
Winners of two straight, Richmond is finally home after starting the season with three consecutive road games wrapped around a bye week. The Spiders' last game played at UR Stadium was Nov. 11, 2006 versus Towson -- that was 322 days ago.
Behind the back-to-back dazzling performances by the nation's second-leading rusher -- senior RB Tim Hightower -- the Spiders are the No. 2 total offense team in the NCAA (FCS) and bring the nation's second-best rushing attack into today's game.
The Wildcats, meanwhile, rank among the Top 10 nationally in scoring offense, passing offense and total offense and boast the defending Walter Payton Award winner in senior QB Ricky Santos.
Senior RB Tim Hightower has been named both CAA Football Player of the Week and the National Offensive Player of the Week for the second time in three weeks.
The Spiders are in their first year of competition in the Colonial Athletic Association. CAA Football, regarded as one the nation's top Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) conferences, is comprised of the same 12 teams that played in the Atlantic 10 Conference until last season.
Last Meeting:
New Hampshire used back-to-back touchdowns in the third quarter to pull away from visiting Richmond and win 27-17 in a match-up of undefeated and Top-10-ranked teams at Cowell Stadium in Durham Oct. 7, 2006. Touchdown runs by Tim Hightower and Josh Vaughan answered two UNH field goals by Tom Manning, giving the No. 7 Spiders a 14-6 lead at the half. But Ricky Santos threw a pair of TD passes in the second half and Muji Karim returned a fumble 60 yards for another score as the No. 1 Wildcats improved to 5-0, 2-0. Richmond fell to 4-1, 1-1.
Up Next:
The Spiders are on the road again next Saturday, playing Towson in a key CAA South Division match-up. Kickoff is set for a Noon ET in game televised live by Comcast SportsNet.
