Quick Slants:
Richmond is one game into its 125th season of football and its fourth under head coach Dave Clawson.
Today marks the CAA Football opener for both teams, with each coming off setbacks against Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) teams last weekend -- Richmond fell at Vanderbilt and Northeastern fell at Northwestern.
The Spiders are 12-9 in conference openers since 1986 -- their first season in the Yankee Conference, which became the A-10 and now the CAA. Richmond downed Northeastern in last year's opener at UR Stadium, 12-7, and has won three of its last five. Under Clawson, Richmond is 2-1.
Redshirt freshman Justin Rogers was named the first-ever CAA Football Rookie of the Week (9/2/07). The Baton Rouge, La. native collected 201 yards in kickoff returns, including a 93-yarder for TD, against Vandy last Saturday.
Senior WR Arman Shields caught 12 passes for 107 yards against the Commodores, moving him into a tie for second in career receptions at Richmond.
The Spiders are in their first year of competition in the Colonial Athletic Association. CAA Football, regarded as one the nation's top Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) conferences, is comprised of the same 12 teams that played in the Atlantic 10 Conference until last season.
Last Meeting:
A wild and windy first quarter proved to be the difference as Richmond downed Northeastern, 12-7, Sept. 30, 2006 at UR Stadium. The Spiders scored three times in the period by way of a blocked punt return for TD, a field goal and a safety, to lead 12-0. The defense also blocked an NU field goal in the opening 15 minutes. Tim Hightower carried the ball 37 times for 149 yards (both career highs) to lead a rushing attack that out-gained the Huskies 167-25. The win moved the Spiders to 4-0, while dropping the Huskies to 1-4.
Up Next:
The Spiders are off next week before ending their three-game season-opening road swing at Bucknell Sept. 22 at 1 p.m. in Lewisburg, Pa.
