Quick Slants:
No. 5 Richmond looks to keep its eight-game home winning streak alive, hosting No. 1 James Madison in a titanic top-five tilt between CAA Football South Division arch rivals.
The Spiders are ranked No. 5 in the Sports Network poll this week, two weeks after being overtaken by the Dukes in the No. 1 spot.
Sophomore CB Justin Rogers has three TDs this season thanks to two interception returns and a fumble return. That ranks as the second-most defensive TDs scored in the NCAA this season behind the four by UT-Martin's Dontrell Miller (two int., two fumble).
With four interceptions this season, Rogers -- the reigning CAA Special Teams Player of the Year -- is tied with eight other FCS players for second-most in the nation.
The Spiders are fresh off a 56-16 win at VMI in which six different Spiders scored the team's eight touchdowns, including a pair of defensive TDs on fumble returns.
Richmond, which has won two of the last three meetings with JMU, has played a No. 1-ranked opponent twice since 1990. Both of those match-ups came on the road -- at Montana in the 2000 NCAA Playoffs and at New Hampshire in 2006.
Richmond is under the direction of first-year head coach Mike London, who is a 1983 Richmond graduate and the first alum to lead the Spiders' football program since Ed Merrick (1951-65).
The 2008 season marks the 126th season of football at Richmond and is the 40th Anniversary of the 1968 team that finished 8-3 and won the Tangerine Bowl.
Up Next:
The Spiders return to action next Saturday, with the second of two-straight Top-25 match-ups at Massachusetts. Kickoff is set for 3:30 p.m. in Amherst, Mass. in a game that can be seen live on CN8.
