The No. 7 Spiders (9-3, 5-2) earned one of the eight at-large selections and have won five-consecutive games, including Saturday's thrilling overtime win at No. 16 William & Mary, 23-20. The 21-st ranked Colonels (8-3, 7-1), who have won seven-consecutive, clinched the Ohio Valley Conference Championship with Saturday's 33-31 win at Tennessee-Martin.
No. 7 Richmond is making its second-consecutive playoff appearance, its third in the last four years and its seventh all-time. Coming off the program's first-ever NCAA Semifinals appearance, the Spiders own a 6-7 record all-time in playoff games (4-2 in the first round).
Richmond won round-one tilts over Boston (35-33) in 1984, Youngstown State (10-3) in 2000, Hampton (38-10) in 2005 and EKU (31-14) last season.
Last season's first-round tilt was lone meeting between the Richmond, Va. and Richmond, Ky. football powers.
The Spiders are one of five CAA Football teams to earn a postseason, after the conference placed an FCS record five on the bracket last season.
