Richmond Mayor Declares January 12 As Spiders' National Championship Day

RICHMOND - As a result of the University of Richmond winning the 2008 Division I Football National Championship, which marks the school's first NCAA Championship in any sport, City of Richmond Mayor L. Douglas Wilder issued the following statement:
"In that this NCAA Championship milestone within the University of Richmond's long and distinguished history occurred during my administration as Mayor and I have been a longstanding supporter of the University and its ongoing plans to build a new stadium, I am issuing a proclamation to recognize this achievement," said the Mayor. "This proclamation will be presented to the Spiders team on January 12, 2009, at which time the Council will also recognize the team."
"I encourage all citizens to join together in celebration of this monumental accomplishment by the University of Richmond Spiders football team which finished the 2008 season with an outstanding 13 win and 3 loss record, setting a team record for number of victories, with the NCAA Championship win representing its ninth straight win of the season."
The Spiders will be recognized at the City Council meeting on January 12th, during the regularly-scheduled council meeting.
