May 19, 2008
UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - The Richmond men's soccer team announced the 2008 schedule, featuring a match-up with 2007 National Runner-Up Massachusetts and 10 of the 18 games taking place in the city of Richmond.
The Spiders will play eight home games at First Market Stadium and another two in the VCU Nike/Alltel Challenge at Sports Backers Stadium. The Spiders will leave the city just three times before conference play and will end the regular-season schedule with five of their last seven games at home, including the last three.
"We definitely have a schedule that is less travel-intensive than in the past several years," Richmond head coach Jeff Gettler. "We have an opportunity to get off to a good start and get some momentum going into conference play."
Richmond opens play at Lehigh (Aug. 29), before playing Seton Hall (Sept. 5) and Bryant (Sept. 7) in the VCU Nike/Alltell Challenge at Sports Backers Stadium. The Spiders head to Pittsburgh to play Lafayette (Sept. 12) and Marshall (Sept. 13) in the Duquesne Invitational, before their home opener against VCU at First Market Stadium on Sept. 17.
After a trip to George Mason (Sept. 20), the Spiders close non-conference play with home games against Longwood (Sept. 24) and Marist (Oct. 4), sandwiched around and Alumni Game on Sept. 27.
Richmond opens conference play on Oct. 10 at Dayton and plays at Xavier on Oct. 12. The Spiders host Saint Joseph's (Oct. 17) and Temple (Oct. 19) before their final road trip at 2007 National Runner-Up and Atlantic 10 Champion Massachusetts (Oct. 24) and at Rhode Island (Oct. 26).
The Spiders conclude the regular-season with three-straight home games against George Washington (Nov. 1), Saint Bonaventure (Nov. 7) and Duquesne (Nov. 9). The 2008 Atlantic 10 Championship will be played Nov. 13-16 at Duquesne.
