University of Richmond Athletics
Game Notes: No. 4 Richmond 28, No. 15 Elon 10

Aug. 31, 2008
Since 1919, only four Richmond coaches have made their head-coaching debuts on the road and the previous three were winless -- Frank Dobson (1919), Frank Jones (1966), Dave Clawson (2004).
With London's victory, Richmond's 33 head coaches are now 14-16-3 in their first games coaching the Spiders.
The 22 yards rushing by Elon was the fewest by a Spider opponent since William & Mary ran for 18 yards (21 attempts) in a 41-7 Richmond victory on Nov. 19, 2005.
Junior QB Eric Ward set a new career high with his 236 yards passing, surpassing his previous best of 218 yards set last season versus Delaware.
Richmond converted eight of 14 third-down plays, with Ward having a hand in six of them (three by rushing, three by passing).
The two-yard rush on third-and-one in the third quarter by All-Conference senior FB John Crone was his first carry since 2005.
Senior DE Sherman Logan's (a 12-yard loss on QB Scott Riddle in the first quarter) was the 15th of his career, but his first since Oct. 7, 2006. It also pushed him into Richmond's Top-10 all-time.
The Ward-to-Grayson 80-yard TD pass was tied for the sixth-longest in school history and ranked as Richmond's longest pass from scrimmage since D'Arcy Wills hit Boyd Ouden for an 80-yard strike in 2002. (The school record is an 88-yard pass from Charlie Richards to Jim Livesay in 1970).
Junior K Andrew Howard made good on all four extra point attempts, extending the school-record for consecutive PATs made to 96. He has not missed a PAT in his collegiate career.
Richmond improved to 41-24 when playing as a ranked team since 1993 (10-2 since the start of 2007)... 26-37 when playing against a ranked team since 1995 (7-1 since 2007)... 21-4 when scoring first since 2005... 27-2 when leading at the half since 2005 (12-0 since 2007).
Richmond had two drives of 80+ yards versus Elon and both ended in touchdowns. Since the start of the 2005 season, the Spiders are a perfect 28-for-28 producing points on drives of 80 yards or longer, with 26 of those resulting in touchdowns.
The game marked the first meeting of Top-15 teams at Elon's Rhode Stadium.
The announced attendance of 10,847 ranked as the second-largest crowd in Rhodes Stadium history - the record was 13,100 for the Appalachian State game last season. (Estimates put the Richmond contingent at approximately 2,000.)
